Juniors from Isle of Ely Rowing Club have made a solid start to the regatta season.
Rebecca Welch, Alice Thompson, Helena O’Donnell and Molly Johnson won in their J18 coxless quad at the Nottingham City Regatta on Saturday 14 May 2016 at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, They beat their nearest rivals, King's School Worcester, by clear water as they crossed the finish line.
Two weeks later on Sunday 29 May the girls competed at the National Schools’ Regatta and came second in the B final in the Championship Girls' Quadruple Sculls against a class field. Also in action at the schools regatta was Sam Champion who came fourth in the A final of the J18 single sculls.
The National Schools’ Regatta is the largest regatta for juniors aged 14 to 18 in Great Britain. Held this year at Dorney Lake near Windsor, venue for rowing at the 2012 Olympics, it is considered by many to be the most prestigious event on the junior rowing calendar.
Elsewhere Sam also competed in the GB squad at the Munich Junior Regatta. He was part of a 33-strong squad selected after a series of Junior Trials that featured hundreds of teenage rowers from across Britain.
These talented juniors are all part of the British Rowing START programme - a high performance training programme that trains and develop athletes for the GB Rowing Team.
